Cricket Australia (CA) has extended an olive branch towards former international David Warner by lifting his lifetime ban on captaincy after six-and-a-half years.
CA announced its decision after a review by a three-person panel that unanimously voted in Warner’s favor, noting his “sincere and genuine” remorse. The panel found Warner had met the necessary criteria for reinstatement following changes to the Code of Conduct in 2022.
The panel also considered references citing “the contribution that Mr. Warner has made, and can make in the future, towards the development of young cricketers in Australia if they were allowed to be led by Mr. Warner, his important continuing role in fostering interest in cricket especially with the South Asian community in Australia and generally.”
Warner was handed a lifetime ban from captaincy after playing a part in the infamous “Sandpaper Gate” scandal in 2018 which rocked Australian cricket. The left-hander found plenty of support in his corner especially given that Steve Smith, the captain during the Cape Town Test, had returned to lead Australia in both Test and ODI formats.
David Warner, meanwhile, had only been allowed to captain teams outside Australia, including stints with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
The left-hander is now favorite to lead Sydney Thunder in the upcoming season of the Big Bash League having already made headlines recently for offering his opening services to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
