Sindh Has Reported 226,000 Dog Bite Cases in 2024

In a troubling health crisis, Sindh has reported over 226,000 dog bite cases this year, according to official records. The rising number of stray dogs has intensified the issue, leading to 12 fatalities linked to rabies and infections from dog bites.

Between January and March, the province recorded the most cases, with over 27,000 incidents each month. Cases dipped slightly in the summer, but by September, monthly incidents again exceeded 24,000. On average, nearly 120 cases are reported daily across Sindh.

Health experts stress immediate medical care after a dog bite, advising thorough cleaning of the wound with soap and water for at least 15 minutes, followed by antiseptic application and doctor consultation.

Immediate treatment is especially crucial for bites from stray dogs, as rabies vaccination may be necessary. Public pressure is mounting on the Sindh government to address the stray dog population and to enhance access to treatment and vaccinations to curb this health risk.
