Punjab’s Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has addressed Lahore’s air pollution crisis, urging citizens to join the fight against smog.
In a press conference about the Anti-Smog Action Plan, Aurangzeb acknowledged that while significant measures are underway, it may take eight to ten years to eliminate smog. She noted that certain hotspots in Lahore are burdened by methane clouds and heat islands.
Aurangzeb shared that, of the city’s 45,000 motorcycles, 1,800 are smoke-emitting, alongside 100,000 vehicles, 1,200 kilns, and 60,800 industrial units—all impacting a population of 15 million. She highlighted that Lahore experiences 275 days of unhealthy Air Quality Index (AQI) levels yearly, with temperatures rising by 3.2°C.
Calling for collective action, Aurangzeb said efforts from both the government and residents would be required to see substantial improvements within the next decade. She clarified that 70% of Lahore’s smog is produced locally, with only 30% originating from India.
She noted that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has been implementing a multi-sector anti-smog action plan for six months, including awareness campaigns and stricter regulations. The government has demolished 700 kilns across Punjab, including 212 in Lahore, enforcing a zero-tolerance approach to emissions. The Environmental Protection Department has conducted 15,000 inspections, sealing 64 mills and demolishing 152 factories in its fight against pollution.
To further combat smog, the government is encouraging sustainable waste disposal among farmers and has lodged over 400 FIRs against those burning crop residue. Anti-smog squads are operating in high-risk areas, monitoring vehicle emissions, and ensuring smoke-emitting vehicles do not enter Lahore without valid fitness certificates.
A recent cabinet decision also mandates clamping down on all smoke-emitting vehicles in Lahore, with efforts to expand the Environmental Protection Agency’s resources.
Aurangzeb concluded by stressing the importance of citizen involvement in fighting smog, emphasizing that a joint effort is essential for achieving a smog-free Lahore.

Smog is created by high emissions. Before lahore, smog was a norm in LA, London. Both had to take emergency actions to stop it .
8 to 10 ? Smog will be here as long as lahore exists . There is no stopping it except for proper policy implementation. Kilns are not causing this much smoke. Stubble burning and cars are causing due to rise of SUVs and diesel vehicles.
