Gary Kirsten Officially Steps Down as Pakistan Coach

Pakistan cricket team’s white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten has officially resigned after just a four month tenure with the team.

There are reports of a rift between the Pakistan Cricket Board and Gary Kirsten following the announcement of the squads for the upcoming series against Australia and Zimbabwe. PCB allegedly did not take the South African’s suggestions on the squad into account while announcing the teams, leading to a disagreement that is likely to end in a divorce between the two parties.

It is a similar approach followed by PCB’s new selection committee which also divested test coach Jason Gillespie and captain Shan Masood from having a say in team selection which did not sit well with the Australian either. However, while their test coach was adamant about continuing his duties, Kirsten seems to have taken a different route.

The former South African cricketer will not accompany the team on their tour to Australia and will likely return to his coaching duties worldwide with several franchises.

Gary Kirsten was appointed as Pakistan’s white-ball coach in April on a two-year contract but his side’s disastrous T20 World Cup campaign raised early alarm bells before the diminution of his powers proved to be the final nail in the coffin.

Who will replace Gary Kirsten?

Aqib Javed is likely to accompany the Pakistan cricket team as manager in the short term, with PCB looking at potential candidates in the meantime. Reportedly, that is why he has yet to be announced as Pakistan’s chief selector.

Aqib already has goodwill with PCB after his influence in Pakistan’s win over England and if given the role might become the most powerful person in PCB management.
