Mohammad Rizwan, recently named as Pakistan’s white-ball captain, has outlined his vision for leading the team in the forthcoming white-ball series against Australia as well as beyond.
The 32-year-old wicketkeeper has taken over from star batsman Babar Azam, who resigned as Pakistan’s white-ball captain earlier this month.
Babar stepped down following a string of poor performances by the national team, most notably in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where they experienced their first-ever exit in the group stage.
Mohammad Rizwan will begin his tenure as Pakistan’s captain during the upcoming tour of Australia, which includes a three-match ODI series followed by three T20 internationals, set to take place from November 4 to November 18.
In an interview put out by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Rizwan expressed his desire to develop a backup leader for the national team.
“I want to develop new leaders for Pakistan and prepare a bunch of players, who are ready to take the team forward after us,” he exclaimed.
Speaking with regards to competing, Rizwan stated his goal of breaking Pakistan’s ICC Trophy drought, with a focus on the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup in 2026.
“In the past few years, we have played semi-finals and finals in the ICC events. Now, with the Champions Trophy in 2025 and T20 World Cup in 2026 coming up, our vision is to bring success to Pakistan. We’ve targeted these two events, and if we participate in the Olympics in 2028, that’s also part of my vision,” the keeper concluded.
