Is Punjab Considering Holidays for Schools Due to Smog?

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced potential school closures due to hazardous air quality in Lahore. As the province grapples with severe pollution, students have reported respiratory issues, raising alarms among health officials and educators.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore has soared to concerning levels, prompting the government to evaluate the situation closely. In light of this, Minister Hayat stated that the government has already adjusted school hours and indicated that closures might be necessary if health conditions worsen.

Parents and the community are urged to collaborate with the government in combating the smog issue. The worsening air quality affects not only students but also poses broader health risks to approximately 15 million residents of Lahore.

Local sources and pollution from neighboring regions contribute significantly to the city’s air quality crisis. While immediate measures are being implemented, including monitoring vehicle emissions and addressing industrial pollution, officials acknowledge that substantial improvements could take eight to ten years.

The Punjab government is dismantling brick kilns and promoting better waste management practices as part of long-term strategies to mitigate air pollution.
