A new resolution aimed at banning dance and music gatherings at weddings sparked debate in the Punjab Assembly, drawing strong opinions on both sides. Uzma Kardar, a Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA), voiced her opposition, urging that small moments of joy, such as wedding celebrations, should not be restricted.
“We oppose restrictions on celebrating our children’s weddings in line with Punjab’s cultural traditions,” Kardar argued, questioning whether the proposer truly understood local customs.
In an unusual remark, Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan highlighted the double standard in how performances are perceived, stating, “If a DPO calls in Mahak Malik, it’s considered art and culture, but if a poor person does it, it’s labeled as obscenity.”
Samiullah Khan suggested the need for social awareness on these matters, proposing the resolution be revised in a way that respects local values. The resolution, presented by MPA Hameeda Mian, claims that wedding festivities in Punjab have escalated into events that include obscene performances and unethical behavior, casting a negative light on cultural traditions.
The document calls for amendments to Section 294 of the Pakistan Penal Code, advocating fines and stricter penalties, particularly for those who mistreat female dancers or transgender individuals. The resolution also urges immediate enforcement by law enforcement to address these incidents and uphold societal and religious values in wedding celebrations.
