ChatGPT Now Has a Built-in Google-Like Search Engine

OpenAI has unveiled its latest addition to ChatGPT – a built-in web search feature dubbed “ChatGPT Search.” This new feature automatically searches the internet when needed, while also allowing users to manually start searches through a dedicated button.

According to OpenAI, the system merges natural language processing with instant access to current information, including sports results, news updates, stock market data, and other real-time content.

To enhance this service, OpenAI has partnered with multiple news outlets and data providers. These collaborations have enabled specialized visual interfaces for various categories as mentioned before.

ChatGPT now provides access to source citations, including references to news articles and blog posts. While this was absent at launch, users can now access these citations through a dedicated Sources button, which reveals a list of references in a side panel.

This feature’s development involved extensive consultation with media organizations, according to OpenAI. Additionally, insights gained from the SearchGPT prototype played a crucial role in shaping the current iteration of ChatGPT Search.

Looking ahead, OpenAI has announced plans for continued enhancement of the service. The company specifically highlighted shopping and travel as key areas for future improvements.

The feature is now live on chatgpt.com and through desktop and mobile applications for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, Team account holders, and users previously waitlisted for SearchGPT.

The company has outlined a phased deployment schedule for remaining users. Enterprise and Education customers can expect access within the next few weeks, while free users will gain entry “over the coming months.”
