China is planning to crash a spacecraft into a near-Earth asteroid by 2030 as part of a major planetary defense experiment.
The mission is designed to test whether a high-speed impact can alter the orbit of an asteroid that could potentially pose a threat to Earth.
Chinese researchers have selected a 30-meter-wide asteroid known as 2015 XF261, which follows an orbit around the Sun similar to Earth’s. It is expected to pass relatively close to the planet around 2030, making it a suitable target for the mission.
The project will involve two spacecraft launched together before separating after leaving Earth.
One spacecraft will collide with the asteroid at more than 26 times the speed of sound, while the second will remain at a safe distance to observe the asteroid before, during, and after the impact.
The observation spacecraft will continue monitoring the asteroid for several years and send images and scientific data back to Earth.
It will be equipped with cameras, spectrometers, and dust detectors to study the asteroid’s surface rocks, gravity, density, internal layers, and possible hidden minerals.
The final stages of the collision will be carried out autonomously because communication signals from Earth would take too long to guide the spacecraft in real time.
If successful, scientists will measure how much the impact changes the asteroid’s orbit around the Sun and whether it breaks apart its internal structure.
The mission differs from NASA’s 2022 Double Asteroid Redirection Test, commonly known as DART.
NASA’s spacecraft struck Dimorphos, a loosely formed “rubble pile” asteroid, and successfully altered its orbit around a larger asteroid. The Chinese mission, however, aims to strike a more solid asteroid and directly change its path around the Sun relative to Earth.
Researchers from the China National Space Administration said DART proved that an asteroid could be deflected through a kinetic impact, but it did not directly recreate a real planetary defense situation involving an asteroid orbiting the Sun near Earth.
Scientists believe the Chinese mission could provide one of the most detailed studies ever conducted on a small asteroid and improve understanding of how near-Earth objects respond to high-speed collisions.
Asteroid impacts have caused serious damage in the past. The 1908 Tunguska event flattened large areas of forest in Siberia, while the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor explosion injured around 1,500 people.
Researchers say objects of a similar size could cause significant destruction if they collide with Earth.
However, locating and accurately tracking 2015 XF261 remains a major challenge, as the asteroid has been observed only 74 times over the past decade.
