In 2009, Pakistan Railways imported a modern computerized signaling system. This system, installed at 60% of the mainline stations, uses an advanced interlocking system. However, it uses a lot of power, making its operation expensive.
Recently, the power connection at Chichawatni Station on the main line was disconnected due to unpaid electricity bills. As a result, the signaling system stopped working.
With the system down, trains on the railway track are manually piloted along the main lines. Stopped trains are being parked on the main line while passing trains are guided through using PLC communication.
A similar situation occurred a few days ago at Okara Railway Station. Due to unpaid bills, power was cut, affecting the daily stop of 12 express trains from Lahore. Trains are now parked on the main line instead of the platform.
These delays are causing passengers a lot of discomfort. Even high-speed express trains, like the Green Line, are now being slowly passed through PLC and walkie-talkies. This process also leads to significant diesel wastage, costing thousands of rupees.
Passengers have urged railway authorities to ensure trains reach station platforms on time. They have requested a smooth and convenient operation for passengers.
Railway officials, however, report that the system has now been fixed. The electricity bills have been cleared, and power is back at the stations.
