WhatsApp Will Let You Verify Suspicious Images

WhatsApp is testing a notable new feature in its latest Android beta version: Reverse image search. This feature will let users verify any image they receive, making it a seamless way to check the authenticity of photos directly within the app.

Here’s how it works: after receiving an image, tap on it, and head to the three-dots menu in the top right. A new option, “Search on the web,” will appear. Selecting this option uploads the image to Google, which then delivers results with identical or similar images.

Reverse image search lets you immediately check if the image is trustworthy or part of a disinformation attempt. It’s a feature designed for today’s digital age, where image verification can play a crucial role in navigating what’s real and what’s not, especially with the rise of AI tools.

Previously, users had to manually reverse-search an image by uploading it to Google through a separate app. WhatsApp’s new tool eliminates this extra step, offering a much quicker and easier way to double-check images without leaving the chat. It’s perfect for instantly gaining context, whether it’s about a news story, a forwarded meme, or a potentially misleading photo.

Currently, the reverse image search feature is available only for Android beta testers.  It is unclear when this feature will roll out to the stable version of WhatsApp, but it should not be long anymore since it is already available to beta testers.
