Microsoft is Testing AI Features for Notepad and Paint

Notepad, the classic text editor first launched in 1983, is getting an AI upgrade. Microsoft is introducing “Rewrite,” a new feature currently in preview for Windows Insiders, that uses artificial intelligence to help users refine their writing.

By highlighting text and selecting “Rewrite,” users can access a dialogue box offering options to adjust tone, rephrase sentences, and modify text length. The AI then generates three alternative versions of the selected text, allowing users to choose the best fit.

Here is what it looks like.

This update comes only a few months after Microsoft introduced spell check and autocorrect to the age-old text editor.

Since the new Rewrite feature is a “cloud-based service that requires authentication and authorization”, you will need to be signed in to your Microsoft account in order to use it. This feature will initially become available through a preview of Windows 11 in the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany.

In addition to the new “Rewrite” feature for Notepad, the company is rolling out AI-powered image editing tools for Paint. These tools, previewed last month, include “Generative Fill” for adding elements to images based on text prompts and “Generative Erase” for seamlessly removing unwanted portions of images. While “Generative Erase” will be available to all Windows 11 Insiders, “Generative Fill” will initially be limited to users with Copilot Plus PCs.

Paint’s Generative Fill feature can insert an image based on a prompt.

It is worth mentioning that Generative Erase and Background Removal already exist on Microsoft’s default gallery app for Windows called Photos, but it doesn’t have support for Generative Fill.
