In a strategic move, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering appointing Jason Gillespie as the national team’s all-format head coach, contingent upon the team’s performance during its current white-ball tour of Australia.
Rather than scouting new candidates, sources indicate the PCB is leaning towards offering Gillespie the role if Pakistan shows satisfactory results in the remaining matches.
PCB’s experiment of hiring separate coaches for different formats came to a premature end after the departure of Gary Kirsten who quit the team just before Pakistan was set to travel to Australia.
Gillespie, who was initially appointed as the Test team coach, took on an interim role for the white-ball squad following the unexpected resignation of the South African.
PCB insiders have now revealed that PCB will monitor how the team performs under the guidance of Jason Gillespie and whether he should be retained for the future.
The Australian just recently won his first series as head coach of the Pakistan team and seems to have a good rapport with the players as well. Gillespie was also quick to accept his demotion by PCB recently which proved to be a problem for Kirsten.
All factors considered, it is very likely that PCB will keep “Dizzy” as the national team’s coach until at least the Champions Trophy after which the search for a new coach may begin.
