Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho has called for universities to independently conduct the Medical and Dental Colleges Admission Test (MDCAT) to ensure transparency. She expressed concerns that administering the test on a national level with so many students at once compromises the integrity of the process.
During the inauguration of a new Family Planning Skills Lab at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), which was supported by USAID, Dr Azra shared her view that decentralizing the test would improve transparency and reduce the risk of paper leaks.
Each university managing its own MDCAT, she explained, would be more efficient and fair for students. The event also saw the launch of the lab, which aims to improve reproductive healthcare across Sindh. Dr Azra, alongside USAID Mission Director Kate Somvongsiri, highlighted the importance of family planning in enhancing public health.
Dr Azra emphasized that accessible family planning services are essential to address issues like unsafe abortions and improve child-spacing practices. Furthermore, she addressed the need for increased efforts in routine immunisation, particularly concerning polio, and raised awareness about protecting against mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.
She commended USAID’s continued support, which has enabled the creation of this advanced training facility for healthcare providers, ensuring better maternal and child health services.
