The Senate Standing Committee on Interior approved a bill on Thursday that proposes strict penalties for individuals promoting Zionist ideology or displaying Zionist symbols in Pakistan.
The Criminal Law Amendment Bill, introduced by Senator Afnanullah Khan, aims to curb what it describes as “Zionist propaganda,” which it argues fuels violence and disrupts social harmony.
During the session, Senator Khan voiced concerns over the impact of Zionist ideology, citing recent events in Gaza as an example of its divisive effects.
“Zionism advocates a global ideology of division and promotes hostility, as evidenced by the tragic deaths of children in Gaza,” Khan stated.
The bill describes Zionism as originating in 1890, when Nathan Birnbaum introduced it as an ethnic and religious movement.
However, it claims that over time, Zionism transformed into a political campaign focused on creating a Jewish homeland in Israel, employing “extreme means” to accomplish its goals.
If enacted, individuals found guilty of spreading Zionist propaganda could face up to three years in prison along with a Rs. 40,000 fine, while displaying Zionist symbols would result in two years imprisonment and a Rs. 30,000 fine. The offenses are classified as bailable, with no provision for immediate arrest.
Senator Khan emphasized that the legislation intends to limit Zionist influence within Pakistan, which he believes is supported by certain groups in the country.
