Former Cricketer Calls for Women’s League in Pakistan

Iram Javed, a seasoned member of Pakistan’s women’s cricket team, has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to establish a dedicated women’s cricket league, stating it’s crucial for the growth of women’s cricket in the country.

Speaking at a media event in Karachi, Iram called for a Pakistan Super League (PSL) style tournament for women, emphasizing that it would provide invaluable high-level experience for Pakistan’s women cricketers.

“If we are given league opportunities, we too can reach international standards,” Iram said, stressing the need for competitive exposure. She highlighted how leagues in other countries have bolstered their women’s teams by improving players’ technical skills and mental toughness.

Iram credited her own development to the three exhibition games organized by the PCB, where she had the chance to compete alongside international stars. “Playing alongside the top players made me feel like a different player in the middle; it boosted my confidence,” she shared.

Iram Javed also emphasized that repeatedly competing against the same players limits growth potential, and expanding the player pool would foster development and add depth to Pakistan’s women’s cricket.

While India has gone on to introduce a Women’s IPL and Australia has taken the initiative of launching the Women’s Big Bash League, Pakistan has not followed suit instead focusing on the same old five or fewer team tournaments that do not move the needle for player development.

The lack of detail shows when Pakistan’s women’s team competes against the established stars in the international arena.

Iram’s call for a women’s league underscores the need for investment in the women’s game and aligns with her vision to bring Pakistan’s women’s cricket to new heights.
