Pakistani snooker champion Mohammad Asif, fresh off his victory at the IBSF World Snooker Championship in Qatar, returned to Karachi Airport on Sunday to a quiet welcome, which left him feeling disappointed.
Despite his remarkable achievement, no government officials were present to greet him, which Asif described as discouraging, especially for young athletes looking up to champions like him.
Asif, who claimed his third world title by defeating an Iranian opponent in the final, shared with Geo News his ambition to pursue a fourth title to further solidify his standing in the sport.
Although officials from the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) were there to receive him, the lack of federal or provincial government representation was “disheartening,” according to Asif.
Reflecting on his tournament journey, Asif acknowledged the early difficulties he faced but noted that he gained confidence and rhythm as the championship advanced.
He credited the PBSA, particularly its chairman Alamgir Shaikh, for their consistent support. Shaikh, he shared, had a personal wish to see him achieve this third title.
One of his more challenging matches, Asif said, was against Qatari cueist Ahmed Saif, which gave him the momentum he needed to push through to the final victory.
Asif called on the government to recognize and support the nation’s top athletes more actively, urging for better incentives for world champions.
With renewed confidence from his recent success, Asif is now focused on securing a fourth title to establish a lasting record for Pakistan, one that he hopes will stand the test of time.
When asked about his rapport with Indian players, Asif described it as “cordial,” mentioning that both Indian and Pakistani players are keen on competing in each other’s countries.

Current Snooker World Champion is Kyren Wilson. IBSF World Championship is just a minor non professional, unimportant tournament. So nothing special.
But it doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be welcomed at the airport and not even recognized for winning a tournament whether small or big 🤦🏻♂️
what was he expecting, the whole government that is busy doing nothing to come and greet him at airport?!
Probably because he’s not really the world champion of snooker. This is not the main body of snooker, all the best players are with match room.
He won the amateur championship. Not the Actual World championship of snooker. Get you facts straight.
Every tom, dick & Herry is expecting welcome like Arshad Nadeem.
