Legendary fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to focus on grooming a new wave of fast bowlers to uphold Pakistan’s rich legacy in pace bowling in the future.
Speaking to a media channel, Nawaz sent a message directed at PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and selection committee convener Aqib Javed, highlighting key areas where Pakistan’s current pacers could refine their game for greater impact.
Sarfraz, celebrated for his profound knowledge of fast-bowling intricacies, offered candid insights into the performances of Pakistan’s leading pacers.
Addressing Shaheen Shah Afridi’s recent form, Sarfraz Nawaz observed that Shaheen’s speed has dropped noticeably since his knee injury.
Once capable of hitting 140 km/h and above, Shaheen’s new-ball deliveries now hover around 133 km/h, occasionally falling to 129 km/h in later spells. “Improving his fitness is crucial to regain his former pace,” Sarfraz emphasized, advocating for a return to peak physical condition.
On Naseem Shah, Sarfraz remarked that the young pacer, once a consistent 145 km/h bowler with the new ball, has also seen a dip in speed.
Sarfraz suggested Naseem could benefit from adding more variety and making better use of the crease to diversify his bowling approach.
Turning his focus to Muhammad Hasnain, Sarfraz advised the pacer to work on accelerating his run-up to generate more power at the delivery finish.
Recalling the formidable speed Hasnain showcased early in his career, Sarfraz encouraged him to reclaim that form to make a stronger impact on the international stage.
Sarfraz Nawaz concluded by underscoring that with the right emphasis on fitness and skill development, Pakistan has the potential to nurture a formidable pace attack.
Pakistan’s pace battery was in full flow in the recently concluded series against Australia, helping rattle their vaunted batting line-up in all three games on their way to securing a series win for Pakistan. Taking guidance from the “father of reverse swing” could only help improve them further.
Sarfraz Nawaz’s call serves as a reminder of the importance of continuity and growth in Pakistan’s pace-bowling tradition, urging the PCB to focus on building a sustainable future for its fast-bowling talent.
