Google recently launched Learn About, an experimental AI tool focused on learning, not just information.
Unlike chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT, Learn About uses the LearnLM AI model introduced by Google this spring. What sets it apart is that this model is firmly established in educational research and specifically designed to align with how people learn. Responses from Learn About feature visual and interactive elements, adding a new layer of engagement to educational content.
In a comparison test by The Verge, they asked both Learn About and Google Gemini, “How big is the universe?” Both responded with the fact that “the observable universe” is “about 93 billion light-years in diameter.” However, the presentation differed greatly.
Google Gemini provided a Wikipedia diagram and a concise two-paragraph summary with source links. Learn About, on the other hand, emphasized an image from Physics Forums and added related educational content, including links to articles and videos.
Learn About also introduced textbook-style boxes that offer additional insights. These boxes provide context like “why it matters” and define terms with “Build your vocab” sections. A sidebar also appears, suggesting related topics for further exploration, allowing users to continue learning seamlessly within the tool.
Curious about Learn About’s versatility, The Verge also asked, “What’s the best kind of glue to put on a pizza?” While Google’s AI search overviews have struggled with this question before, Learn About identified it correctly, even adding a “common misconception” tag.
With its interactive approach, Learn About sets itself apart from traditional AI chatbots, positioning itself as a tool for in-depth, engaging learning experiences.
