Google has unveiled a notable upgrade to Maps, introducing several AI-powered features driven by its Gemini AI. The update, rolling out this week to Android and iOS users transforms the app into a more intelligent travel companion.
The new AI upgrades enable users to receive personalized recommendations for activities and destinations. Maps can now generate customized trips for people or groups within specified areas. The system also offers AI-powered summaries of user reviews and can respond to specific queries about what different places offer, such as outdoor seating availability or ambient noise levels.
For navigation, the updated ‘add stops’ feature now suggests landmarks, attractions, scenic viewpoints, and dining options along planned routes. The navigation interface has been refined to display clearer lanes, crosswalks, and road signs while providing more precise lane positioning guidance for exits.
Additionally, Google has introduced a community-driven weather alert system, allowing drivers to report weather-related disruptions, creating a real-time information network for fellow travelers.
Google Maps is introducing smart parking assistance that automatically identifies nearby parking facilities as users approach their destinations. This is complemented by comprehensive last-mile navigation, offering detailed walking directions from parking spots to venue entrances through Street View or augmented reality (AR) guidance.
The update also brings improvements to Maps’ Immersive View feature, an advanced tool that combines AI, photographic imagery, and computer vision technology. This system creates detailed, context-aware representations of locations such as stadiums and parks, complete with real-time weather conditions and traffic patterns specific to users’ chosen times and locations.
These updates are rolling out to Google Maps used on Android and iOS in the US and a few other regions, but should reach more countries eventually.
