Punjab to Hold ‘Namaz-e-Istisqa’ Across the Province This Week

Punjab will hold “Namaz-e-Istisqa,” or a rain prayer, on 15 November to seek relief from the persistent smog affecting the province.

The Department of Religious Affairs announced the province-wide prayer, which aims to invoke rain as a remedy for the severe air quality crisis, Express News reported.

Authorities see the prayer as an important step, with rainfall viewed as a potential means to clear the thick haze enveloping Punjab. Lahore, in particular, has been ranking among the world’s most polluted cities in recent days, with the heavy smog-causing disruptions in daily life and posing significant health risks.

According to the Department of Meteorology, while thunderstorms and strong winds could provide slight relief, substantial rainfall is unlikely in Lahore. However, officials hope that Namaz-e-Istisqa will inspire divine mercy, bringing rainfall to ease smog levels.

Environmental data has revealed Lahore as the world’s second most polluted city, with an alarming AQI of 644. The AQI in New Delhi, ranked first, recorded an unprecedented 1,267. Multan follows Lahore as Pakistan’s second most polluted city, with Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar also showing high pollution levels.
