Artificial Rain For Rawalpindi and Islamabad Delayed

Sources reported that efforts to create artificial rainfall through cloud seeding in Rawalpindi and Islamabad have been suspended due to technical difficulties and a lack of suitable conditions.

In coordination with the Punjab government, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) had initially considered the cloud-seeding method to address the persistent smog blanketing the twin cities. However, the initiative has been put on hold due to unfavorable cloud conditions and a lack of clearance from key authorities.

The EPD noted that while clouds are currently present over the region, they do not meet the necessary criteria for artificial rain. The aviation and meteorological departments also declined to approve the operation, leading the authorities to halt the planned intervention.

The EPD has indicated that if ideal cloud conditions arise, artificial rain could still be pursued, potentially extending from Rawalpindi to Lahore. However, the cost of such a project is significant, with expenses estimated between Rs. 250 million to Rs. 300 million.

The suspension of the cloud-seeding effort leaves residents of the twin cities without this temporary solution for the heavy smog affecting air quality and visibility.

Cloud seeding, a process involving the dispersal of chemicals like silver iodide and sodium chloride into clouds, is typically conducted from altitudes of 2,000 to 4,000 feet using specialized aircraft. These chemicals help form ice crystals within clouds, increasing their density and triggering rainfall.
