French football giants Olympique Lyonnais commonly known as Lyon, one of Ligue 1’s most storied clubs, are under severe financial scrutiny and face relegation to Ligue 2 unless they address their spiraling debts.
The French football financial watchdog, DNCG (Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion), issued the stern warning on Friday, adding a further layer of complexity to Lyon’s troubled season.
As part of the DNCG’s ruling, Lyon will also be prohibited from signing new players in the upcoming January transfer window. To compound matters, the club’s payroll will now be strictly monitored by the DNCG, restricting their financial flexibility.
Lyon’s owner, American businessman John Textor, who also owns shares in Crystal Palace and is the majority stakeholder in Brazilian club Botafogo, is at the center of the financial storm. His Eagle Football Group recently disclosed debts amounting to a staggering £422 million.
Textor now faces immense pressure to stabilize Lyon’s finances if they are to avoid playing in Ligue 2. Reports suggest that he may consider selling his stake in Crystal Palace or offloading key players from Botafogo to help bridge the gap.
Lyon, seven-time French champions, may have no choice but to offload several of their star players during the January transfer window to balance the books. Such a move, while financially necessary, would undoubtedly weaken the squad and hinder their ability to compete in Ligue 1 and Europe.
Currently sitting fifth in Ligue 1 and ninth in their Europa League group, Lyon’s performances on the pitch have not mirrored the financial turmoil off it.
However, the DNCG’s ruling casts a long shadow over the club’s ambitions for the season. Failure to resolve their financial issues could see Lyon, a team synonymous with top-flight success, relegated to Ligue 2—a seismic blow to their legacy.
For a club with a rich history and passionate fanbase, the coming months will determine whether Lyon can weather this storm or face the ignominy of relegation and further decline.
