The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has directed universities and colleges in Lahore and Multan to close due to severe smog affecting the region. According to an official notification, classes will be conducted online to protect students and staff from hazardous air quality.
Furthermore, all schools across Punjab, except in Murree, will remain shut until November 24 as part of the government’s efforts to minimize public exposure to the worsening pollution. The Punjab government has also restricted outdoor activities, advising citizens to wear masks and avoid unnecessary outings.
In Lahore and Multan, a three-day lockdown has been enforced every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to combat the smog crisis. Authorities are monitoring air quality and may impose stricter measures if conditions do not improve.
Construction activities in these cities have also been suspended for one week starting November 16.
Senior Minister for Information and Environment, Marriyum Aurangzeb, highlighted the serious health risks posed by smog, likening its impact to COVID-19. To tackle the crisis, market closures at 8 p.m. are being enforced, paramedic leave has been cancelled, and hospital OPD hours extended.
