In a major stride towards combating smog, the Punjab government has successfully carried out a cloud seeding operation using locally developed technology. According to the Provincial Meteorological Department, the effort resulted in artificial rainfall across Jhelum, Gujar Khan, Chakwal, and Talagang on Friday.
The operation, conducted around 2 pm, was followed by showers in targeted areas within hours. Experts are optimistic that similar rainfall could soon help alleviate Lahore’s worsening smog.
The project brought together specialists from Pakistan’s Strategic Plans Division (SPD), Army Aviation, PARCO, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Punjab government. The collaborative effort highlights the region’s growing focus on innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised the initiative, describing it as a historic moment. Today, through your hard work, dedication, and expertise, Punjab has made history. The entire nation is proud of you,” she said.
Senior Minister Mariam Aurangzeb also acknowledged the achievement, pointing out that, unlike last year’s UAE-supported experiment, this breakthrough was achieved through local efforts.
The government hopes this breakthrough will serve as a sustainable step forward in addressing the province’s smog crisis while showcasing Pakistan’s technological capabilities.

Good work keep it up
they always try to opt for quick and short-term solutions, this artificial rain may reduce some smog but the question is how many times will they use this method? lifetime? These incompetent, headless, and useless people should think the other way around, this problem requires a long-term solution. by applying these artificial things they are wasting taxpayers money.
many people always speaking against government good initiatives. Long term solution is stop your cars and use electric cars but government will not allow electric cars as it decreases petrol sales.
These electric cars need electricity, and how does Pakistan create electricity? by burning oil. Pakistan does not have clean energy like nuclear reactors. Pakistan’s electricity is very expensive 80% of the country’s population struggling to pay their electricity bill and here you are talking dumb to use electric cars? tell me one thing how we charge our cars when electricity is so expensive we struggle to pay our home electricity bill and also how many hours we have electricity in Pakistan? we are still struggling from load in 2024. So stop you nonsense and use your head, we have these dumb people as our policy makers just because we have dumb people like you.
The efficiency of fuel combustion is a key factor that makes electric vehicles environmentally friendly. Traditional combustion engine cars operate at an efficiency rate of only 20% to 25%, while power plants achieve efficiencies of 50% to 60%. This means that when electric vehicles are charged with electricity from oil-based power plants, they benefit from a much higher conversion rate of fuel to energy—50% to 60%—which is more than twice as efficient as traditional vehicles. Additionally, with a sufficient number of electric vehicles on the road, we can pave the way for increased use of renewable energy resources.
You might be surprised to learn that, despite experiencing load shedding due to poor transmission lines and inefficient electricity bill recovery, our nation has a surplus of electricity. Recently, you may have come across the term “capacity charges.” These charges are one of the main reasons for the high electricity costs in our country. This is because we have an installed capacity of 40,000 MW, but we only utilize about 25,000 MW at most. Currently, everyone is paying for unused 15000 MW capacity, but with the introduction of electric vehicles, we can utilize that capacity, leading to a decrease in the per-unit cost for everyone.
if you are estimating things only in numbers then our country is about to land on the moon, but look at the ground realities. go out and be with the people at ground level. These numbers do not matter, the only thing that matters is that basics need are not fulfilled yet people are pushing for electric cars. These things only benefits elites and poor/middle class cannot afford such unnecessary things.
what pakistani technology? How is this even considered pakistani technology?
