Khunjerab Border Closed for Winter as Harsh Conditions Set In

The Khunjerab border, an important link between Pakistan and China, has been officially closed for all public traffic, trade, and tourism.

The closure is set to last for four months, from November 30, 2024, to March 30, 2025, as part of an agreement between the two countries.

The closure is necessary due to the harsh winter conditions in the region, with the Khunjerab Pass located at an altitude of about 15,500 feet above sea level. During winter, the area experiences heavy snowfall and extreme weather, which makes transportation and trade difficult.

The Khunjerab border typically operates seasonally, remaining open from April 1 to November 30 each year to allow trade, tourism, and public movement.

This year, the border was closed one day earlier than usual, due to the weekend holidays on Saturday and Sunday. The border is expected to reopen on April 1, 2025.
