ICC Chairman’s Tenure Likely to Be Extended for a Month Amidst Champions Trophy Dispute

The term of Greg Barclay, Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), is expected to be extended by an additional month, delaying the anticipated leadership transition.

The New Zealander, who had announced his decision to step down in August, was initially set to conclude his tenure on November 30. However, the extension aims to facilitate a seamless handover of responsibilities.

India’s Jay Shah, elected unopposed as Barclay’s successor, was scheduled to officially take over as ICC Chairman on December 1.

The extension appears to be a temporary measure to ensure continuity and avoid any potential disruption during the leadership change, especially during the contentious issue of the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The move underscores the ICC’s commitment to maintaining stability as it navigates critical cricketing events and governance priorities.

Greg Barclay was elected as the Chairman of the ICC in November 2020, securing 11 out of 16 votes in the second round of voting to surpass his competitor, Imran Khwaja.

Following his election to the ICC, Barclay stepped down from his position as Chairman of New Zealand Cricket to focus on his new responsibilities.

A veteran of the cricket scene with decades of experience under him, the Kiwi’s tenure may well be defined by how the next month pans out under his leadership and the impact it has on the global cricketing sphere.
