X is the type of platform that is popular with public figures and just as many parody accounts for those. This often blurs the lines between real accounts and fan/parody accounts since they’re not always properly labeled.
However, according to an app engineer, the platform is creating a new label, to solve this issue. This label is coming so users can easily identify these accounts as parody content. If X decides to implement this label and parody accounts choose to adopt it, users will see a “Parody account” designation displayed below the username on both the profile page and their posts.
One of X’s biggest issues may be making sure that parody accounts apply the label to their profiles. Currently, X has a condition in its authenticity policy that addresses these accounts, requiring them to follow the platform’s rules against mimicking other profiles with the intent to mislead users. The policy says:
We allow compliant Parody, Commentary, and Fan (PCF) accounts on X only if the purpose is to discuss, satirize, or share information.
If X introduces a new label, it must also provide guidelines for satirical accounts to implement it. Failure to do so by a significant number of parody accounts could confuse users. Currently, X has a label for automated bot accounts that use its API, but not all comply. Many bad actors misuse automation to manipulate election narratives.
