Former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt has shared his perspective on the ongoing standoff between Pakistan and India regarding the hosting of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Speaking candidly about the diplomatic and sporting tensions between the two nations during ProPakistani’s How Does it Work? Podcast, Salman Butt emphasized that decisions should prioritize the progress and long-term benefits of Pakistan cricket.
The former opener acknowledged the complexities of the situation but urged a pragmatic approach.
The 2025 Champions Trophy is set to be Pakistan’s first major ICC event since the 1996 World Cup. However, India’s reluctance to confirm their participation due to political tensions has put the tournament in jeopardy. While the ICC has backed Pakistan as the host, India’s Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to give assurances about sending its team.
Salman Butt pointed out that the Champions Trophy could be a defining moment for Pakistan cricket. “Pakistan is within its rights to claim what they are claiming. But unfortunately, whatever happens in this world happens on the basis of economics, not on merit” he said (translated).
Butt also urged cricketing authorities to tread carefully while addressing the impasse. “If I was at the helm of affairs, I would see what is best for Pakistan cricket” he added. “At the moment, you are not in a position where you can overcome the economic positions in the world.”
Reflecting on India’s potential absence, Butt acknowledged the gravity of the situation but suggested that Pakistan should be prepared for all outcomes.
Despite the challenges, Salman Butt expressed hope for a resolution that benefits the sport.
As the clock ticks down to the 2025 Champions Trophy, the PCB and ICC face the daunting task of navigating one of cricket’s most politically charged rivalries. For Salman Butt, however, the message is clear: Pakistan cricket must remain at the forefront, no matter the circumstances.
