Google CEO Sundar Pichai Teases Major Changes in 2025

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has hinted at significant changes coming to the company’s search engine in 2025. During the New York Times’ DealBook Summit on Wednesday, Pichai stated that the search engine would “change profoundly” in the coming year, aiming to tackle more complex questions and offer advanced capabilities. He said,

I think you’ll be surprised, even early in ‘25, at the kind of newer things Search can do compared to where it is today.

These comments come amid growing competition in the AI space, where Google is facing pressure from Microsoft and OpenAI. Sundar Pichai responded to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s earlier statement, which suggested that Google should have been the “default winner” in the AI race.

Pichai expressed confidence in Google’s AI models, asserting that Microsoft is “using someone else’s models” about their partnership with OpenAI. He highlighted Google’s focus on leading innovation in the field and maintaining a commitment to staying at the forefront of AI development.

In recent months, Google has made significant strides in integrating AI into its search engine, including AI-generated search summaries and enhanced image and video search capabilities via Google Lens. The company is also preparing to launch a major update to its Gemini AI model, which it hopes will further elevate its search engine and compete with emerging players like Microsoft’s AI and the search engine Perplexity.

As 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on Google’s next steps in the AI-driven evolution of search, as the company works to stay competitive in a rapidly changing landscape.
