Mohammad Siraj and Travis Head Penalized for On-Field Spat

Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj and Australian batter Travis Head have been penalised for their on-field altercation during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in Adelaide. Both players faced disciplinary action under the ICC Code of Conduct for their respective breaches.

Details of the Incident

Mohammed Siraj was fined 20% of his match fee for violating Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to “using language, actions, or gestures that disparage or provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal.”

Meanwhile, Travis Head was sanctioned under Article 2.13, which deals with “abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire, or match referee during an international match.”

Both players also received one demerit point each, marking their first disciplinary offences in the last 24 months. ICC has confirmed that  both players accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

What Happened on the Field?

The incident occurred after Travis Head’s stellar knock of 140 was cut short by Mohammed Siraj. Following the dismissal, Siraj directed a pointed send-off gesture toward Head, signalling the dressing room. The situation escalated briefly, with a verbal exchange between the two players. However, the tension seemed to ease later in the match when Siraj came out to bat, and the pair shared a brief reconciliation on the field.

Match Highlights

The pink-ball Test in Adelaide saw Australia bounce back emphatically from their crushing 295-run loss in Perth. The hosts secured a dominant 10-wicket victory, leveling the high-stakes five-match series.

Travis Head’s explosive 140 off 141 balls proved to be the decisive factor, earning him the Player of the Match award.

The victory temporarily propelled Australia to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings. However, they were soon displaced by South Africa following their win over Sri Lanka, with India slipping to third place.

WTC Implications

The Border-Gavaskar series has major ramifications for the World Test Championship (WTC) standings as the 2025 final draws closer. With the series now tied at 1-1, the upcoming matches promise more high-intensity cricket as both teams vie for crucial points.
