Premier League Sacks Referee Following Controversial Video

David Coote, a 42-year-old Premier League referee, has been dismissed after a series of controversies rendered his position “untenable,” according to referee chiefs at the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

David Coote’s dismissal on Monday follows his suspension last month after a video surfaced on social media in which he referred to former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as “arrogant” while using offensive language.

The PGMOL released a statement confirming David Coote’s sacking:

“Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect. David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable. Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us, and we remain committed to his welfare.”

The video appears to reference a Premier League match between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Klopp criticized David Coote’s officiating after the game, accusing him of being too lenient with Burnley’s physical challenges.

Coote’s dismissal also comes amid further investigations into his behavior:

  • UEFA Disciplinary Proceedings: Coote is under scrutiny for a separate video in which he was allegedly seen snorting a white powder during Euro 2024.
  • FA Investigation: The Football Association is probing claims that Coote discussed betting on awarding a yellow card with a fan before officiating a match in England’s Championship.

Ironically David Coote officiated his last Premier League game on November 9, during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.

David Coote’s conduct has raised serious questions about the professionalism and integrity of Premier League referees. With PGMOL’s swift decision, the organization aims to reaffirm its commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct for officials.
