PSL 10: Franchises Apprehensive About Direct Player Signings

The Pakistan Super League is gearing up for its next season with PSL 10 reportedly set to run from April 8th to May 19th, according to sources. Newly appointed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO Salman Naseer has already started holding online meetings to ensure smooth preparations.

The player draft of PSL 10 is currently scheduled for January 11.

The PCB hopes to invite leading players who went unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to join the PSL. However, the existing salary cap—limited to $200,000 per player—has raised concerns. Both the PCB and some franchise owners worry that this ceiling could deter top-tier international stars from signing up.

Previously, the idea of direct contracts was rejected by the franchises. Now, the PCB is reconsidering that approach for PSL 10, potentially allowing teams to negotiate directly with player agents. Some franchises remain opposed to bypassing the draft, insisting that all marquee players must enter through the standard selection process.

If direct contracts are allowed, bidding wars between franchises could erupt. For example, if one team offers a player $400,000 and another offers $500,000, the player would naturally choose the higher amount. Such arrangements could upset players who are locked in at the $200,000 draft cap, including domestic Pakistani stars who might feel undervalued in comparison.

PSL 10 organizers are optimistic about signing big international names such as David Warner, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, and Jonny Bairstow. Shoaib Khalid, the PCB’s Manager of Player Acquisition, has returned in a part-time capacity and has already reached out to some star players, including Warner, to gauge their interest.
