Pakistan’s towering left-arm pacer Mohammad Irfan has officially retired from international cricket, marking the third retirement from the national team in just over 24 hours.
The 42-year-old speedster, widely regarded as the tallest international cricketer in history, last represented Pakistan more than five years ago. Despite his absence from international cricket, Irfan remained active in domestic competitions, most recently playing for Khan Research Laboratories in the President’s Cup, a List A tournament in Pakistan.

Irfan was a crucial part of Pakistan’s pace attack during the early to mid-2010s. His unique height and ability to generate pace made him a challenging opponent for even the most seasoned batters.
However, injuries and disciplinary challenges affected his career trajectory. A pelvis stress fracture ended his 2015 World Cup campaign prematurely, and in 2017, he served a six-month ban for failing to report a bookmaker’s approach.
In a heartfelt post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Irfan expressed his gratitude for his career:
“I have decided to retire from international cricket. I want to express my deepest gratitude to my teammates, coaches, and fans. Thank you for the love, the cheers, and the unforgettable memories. I will continue to support and celebrate the game that has given me everything.”
Mohammad Irfan’s announcement follows the retirements of all-rounder Imad Wasim and pacer Mohammad Amir, both of whom had previously retired and returned to international cricket. Unlike his counterparts, this marks Irfan’s first retirement from the game.
Mohammad Irfan’s career will be remembered for his towering presence, raw pace, and ability to shine on the biggest stages. Despite setbacks, his contributions to Pakistan cricket remain significant if brief, and his moments of brilliance will not be forgotten. However, many in cricketing circles will feel that Irfan’s career could have yielded better returns if he had played for any other team than Pakistan.
