Bangladesh’s legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been handed a suspension from bowling in all competitions organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) due to his bowling action exceeding the legal elbow extension limit of 15 degrees.
The 37-year-old’s bowling action came under scrutiny during his lone appearance for Surrey in September, marking his return to the County Championship after more than a decade. On-field umpires raised concerns about his action, prompting an independent assessment.
Independent Testing Confirms Illegal Action
Shakib underwent testing at Loughborough University earlier this month. The ECB issued a statement confirming the results which were not in Shakib al Hasan’s favour:
“Shakib completed an independent assessment at Loughborough University earlier this month, which found that the elbow extension in his bowling action exceeded the 15-degree threshold as defined in the Regulations.
“This suspension takes effect from the receipt of the independent assessment on Dec. 10, and follows the process set out in the ECB’s Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with a Suspected Illegal Bowling Action.”
To overturn the suspension, Shakib will need to undergo reassessment and prove that his elbow extension falls within the permissible limit.
Shakib’s Turbulent Year
The suspension adds to what has already been a controversial year for Shakib, often regarded as Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer.
- Political Controversies: Shakib, a member of parliament for the Awami League, has faced criticism amidst political unrest in Bangladesh. The party’s leader, Sheikh Hasina, fled the country following protests earlier this year.
- Retirement and Farewell Test: In September, Shakib announced his retirement from T20 internationals. He chose not to return to Bangladesh for a farewell Test against South Africa in Mirpur in October.
- Future Prospects: Despite the ban and controversies, Shakib is expected to feature in next year’s ICC Champions Trophy, where Bangladesh will aim to make a mark on the global stage.
Previous Challenges
Shakib is no stranger to setbacks. In 2019, he faced a two-year ban (one year suspended) for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code.
A Legacy Under Threat
With his unparalleled contributions to Bangladeshi cricket, Shakib’s suspension raises concerns about his future in the game. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the all-rounder navigates this latest challenge and whether he can return to his dominant best.
Shakib’s road to redemption now hinges on his ability to correct his bowling action and maintain focus amidst ongoing controversies, ensuring his legacy as a cricketing icon remains intact.
