Jason Gillespie Gives His Reasons for Leaving Pakistan Cricket

Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie has disclosed his frustrations with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), suggesting he felt unwelcome in his role as head coach of Pakistan’s Test team.

Gillespie, who led Pakistan to a remarkable 2-1 series victory over England, stepped down last week ahead of the team’s Test series in South Africa, citing poor communication and internal issues as key reasons for his resignation.

Speaking to ABC Sport, Jason Gillespie revealed he was blindsided by the PCB’s decision to terminate high-performance coach Tim Neilsen without any prior consultation.

“The straw that broke the camel’s back, I suppose, was the lack of communication. I was completely and utterly blindsided by the decision to not have a high-performance coach,” Gillespie said.

He emphasized how crucial Neilsen was to the team’s progress:

Tim had been incredibly effective in his role, and the players were getting a lot out of him. The feedback I received was overwhelmingly positive, which made the decision even more baffling.

Jason Gillespie also expressed disappointment at his diminishing influence within the team, describing how his responsibilities were reduced to minimal involvement on match days.

“I felt like I was just hitting catches on the morning of a game,” he shared.

A major turning point for Gillespie came during a group text exchange after Pakistan’s first Test loss against England, where he learned about the formation of a new selection panel—a decision he wasn’t involved in.

Despite the internal challenges, Pakistan achieved significant milestones under Jason Gillespie, including their comeback victory against England and a 50-over series win against Australia earlier in the year. However, these successes were overshadowed by the PCB’s inconsistent communication and decision-making.

“I developed a close relationship with Test captain Shan Masood, and we were moving in the right direction. But without clear communication from stakeholders, it became increasingly difficult to perform effectively.” Dizzy said.

With Jason Gillespie’s departure, Aqib Javed has been named interim Test coach of Pakistan. The PCB is yet to confirm whether he will be given a long-term role or if a new coach will be hired.

The PCB has not yet responded to Jason Gillespie’s comments, but cricket fans and analysts alike will closely watch how the board navigates its coaching setup in the future.
