Karachi Experiences Coldest Night of Winter Season

Karachi experienced a chilly night on Sunday as the minimum temperature dropped to 8.9°C, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The coldest temperature of 8.9°C was recorded at Jinnah Terminal, while other areas, including Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Shahrah-e-Faisal, reported temperatures of 10.5°C and 11.5°C, respectively. In Mauripur, the temperature was slightly higher at 12.5°C.

The PMD noted that the city’s weather remains cold and dry, with daytime temperatures expected to peak at 27°C, similar to the previous day. Winds blowing from the northeast at 7 km/h and a humidity level of 50% were also reported.

However, air quality in Karachi remains a concern, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) measuring 183, indicating unhealthy conditions. Icy winds from Balochistan have intensified the cold, making it feel 2 to 4 degrees lower than the recorded temperatures.

Northern Pakistan Freezes

In contrast, northern Pakistan continues to face severe cold, with Leh recording the lowest temperature at -13°C in the past 24 hours. Skardu registered -7°C, Kalam -6°C, and Islamabad -1°C.

Peshawar, Lahore, and Multan recorded minimum temperatures of 3°C and 7°C, respectively.

Heavy snowfall blanketed the mountains, roads, and trees in Gilgit-Baltistan, while northern Balochistan faced a severe cold wave. Quetta’s temperature fell to -6°C, and Kalat and Ziarat recorded -5°C.

The PMD warned that the cold wave would persist in many parts of the country, with Islamabad and surrounding areas expected to remain cold and dry.
