Apple is reportedly redesigning its Magic Mouse to resolve some of the long-standing criticisms. The current version features a charging port on the bottom, making it impossible to use while charging. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been actively working on a “full overhaul” of the Magic Mouse, which could debut within the next 12 to 18 months, possibly between late 2025 and mid-2026.
The newly designed Magic Mouse will likely address the long-criticized charging port placement and introduce enhancements. Gurman indicates that Apple plans to create a more ergonomic and comfortable design, possibly drawing inspiration from popular alternatives like Logitech’s MX Master series.
While Apple has not revealed specific design details, the new Magic Mouse is expected to significantly differ from the current model, which has remained largely unchanged since its 2009 debut.
This year, Apple updated the Magic Mouse by replacing its Lightning port with a USB-C port, aligning with the company’s shift to USB-C across its product lineup. However, the charging port remains on the bottom, continuing to frustrate users. Reports indicate that Apple’s reluctance to enable charging during use stems from its desire to maintain the device’s aesthetic and user experience.
Over the years, Apple has made incremental updates to the Magic Mouse, including the shift from AA batteries to rechargeable batteries and introducing new color options alongside the 24-inch iMac in 2021. The upcoming redesign, however, appears to be a comprehensive update rather than a minor tweak, addressing both usability and ergonomic concerns.
There is speculation that the newly designed Magic Mouse could come with a higher price tag, possibly marketed as a “Pro” accessory. Apple’s focus on enhancing usability, comfort, and functionality could position the new Magic Mouse as a premium offering in its accessory lineup.
