Electricity Generation in Pakistan Falls by 4% in 5MFY25

Despite an uptick in November 2024, electricity generation in Pakistan during the first five months (July-Nov) of the current fiscal year (5MFY25) fell by 3.9 percent on a year-on-year basis to 58,840 GWh (16,024 MW). 

The fuel cost for the 5MFY25 period stood at Rs. 8.30/KWh, up 4 percent from fuel cost of Rs. 7.96/KWh during the same period of FY24. 

During November 2024, power generation increased by 6.4 percent on a year-on-year basis to reach 8,032 GWh (11,156 MW). On the cost front, the fuel cost of power generation went up by 2 percent YoY, while on a month-on-month basis, it fell by 20 percent to settle at Rs. 7.29/KWh in November 2024.

“After adjusting for transmission losses and PYA, the effective fuel cost stands at Rs. 7.23/KWh compared to the reference rate of Rs. 7.86/KWh, resulting in a negative FCA of Rs. 0.63/KWh for the month,” brokerage house Arif Habib Limited (AHL) said.
