Dubai Blue Line Metro Starting Date Announced

The highly anticipated Dubai Metro Blue Line is set to begin operations on September 9, 2029, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Thursday.

A contract worth Dh20.5 billion has been awarded to three prominent companies — Turkey’s Mapa and Limak, and China’s CRRC — for the construction of the new line. The launch date holds symbolic significance, as it marks a nostalgic nod to the Dubai Metro’s history. The Metro was inaugurated precisely at the 9th second of the 9th minute at 9 PM on 9-9-2009. The Blue Line’s debut will coincide with the 20th anniversary of that historic event.

Spanning 30 kilometers with 14 stations, the Blue Line will operate 28 trains and is projected to serve 200,000 passengers daily in 2030, rising to 320,000 by 2040. The line will accommodate up to 46,000 passengers per hour in both directions and is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on its routes by 20%.

The new metro line will connect Dubai International Airport with key urban areas, including Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1 and 2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City. Travel times along the route will range between 10 and 25 minutes.

The Blue Line is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which envisions a “20-minute city,” ensuring that 80% of essential services are within a 20-minute commute. Residents have already expressed optimism about the project, highlighting its potential to reduce travel costs and enhance convenience.

Futuristic Design

The Blue Line stations will feature a sleek, futuristic design distinct from the current fully enclosed structures on the Red and Green Lines. The new stations will showcase a smooth, curved structure with large oval designs arching over the tracks, while the side structures housing exits will boast a modern, symmetrical aesthetic.

Impact on Property Prices

According to a previous Khaleej Times report, property values and rental prices are expected to rise significantly in areas served by the Blue Line, including International City, Silicon Oasis, Ras Al Khor, Mirdif, and Al Warqa. The RTA estimates that properties near Blue Line stations could appreciate by up to 25%, reflecting the line’s positive economic impact on surrounding neighborhoods.
