Shaheen Afridi once again reminded the world of his unbridled talent in the second ODI against South Africa to once again rewrite record books. After picking up four wickets in the game, Shaheen has claimed an astounding 117 wickets in just 58 ODIs, the most by any fast bowler at this stage of their career.
His incredible feat places him ahead of some of the finest pacers in history, including Mitchell Starc who boasted 113 wickets, and Shane Bond who tallied 111 wickets after the same number of matches in their careers.
Among Pakistani bowlers, Shaheen Afridi’s record now stands as a benchmark, eclipsing Saqlain Mushtaq, who had 115 wickets in his first 58 ODIs. The left-hander has also gone past Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar for the most wickets taken against South Africa for Pakistan.
However, spinners dominate the overall leaderboard. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan leads the pack with 125 wickets, followed closely by Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane with 121 wickets, both redefining what’s possible in modern-day cricket.
Shaheen Afridi’s latest exploits not only underline his brilliance but also reaffirm his position as one of the most impactful bowlers in the world today.

Despite the growing concerns around his drop in pace, Shaheen has remained a key figure in Pakistan’s bowling lineup. With some proper help around him to shoulder the bowling load, Shaheen will likely continue to rewrite record books for his nation and be remembered as one of the best pacers to come out of Pakistan when he decides to hang up his boots.
Still just 24, Shaheen has years ahead of him to get the job done.
