Sindh Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Memon has attributed Karachi’s traffic issues to reckless driver behavior and poor adherence to traffic laws, rather than the presence of heavy vehicles like dumpers.
Speaking on a private news channel, Memon stated, “Vehicles don’t cause accidents on their own; the real issue is how licenses are issued to drivers.” He criticized Pakistan’s lenient licensing system and called for stricter regulations.
Memon emphasized global standard operating procedures (SOPs) for traffic management and stressed that mandatory vehicle fitness tests are often ignored. He announced that from December 1, the Transport Department will implement a new mechanism to enforce traffic regulations more effectively.
He urged traffic police to perform thorough checks and impose significant fines on violators, highlighting that heavy fines are a global standard for ensuring compliance. Memon questioned why Pakistanis, who follow traffic laws abroad, fail to do so domestically.
The minister expressed confidence that addressing driver behavior and enforcement gaps would resolve Karachi’s traffic challenges, including issues related to dumpers.
