Sony has started limiting purchases of its PS5 Disc Drive accessory to one unit per order through the PlayStation Direct online store, citing “high demand” as the reason for the restriction.
The standalone Disc Drive is designed for owners of the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro who want to play physical game discs. With the latest change, the PlayStation Direct store now states that customers can only buy one Disc Drive per order. Sony has also noted that additional household limits may apply.
Sony has not explained why demand for the accessory has increased or how long the purchase limit will remain in place. The company has only attributed the restriction to “high demand” and has not shared any further details.
The move comes shortly after Sony announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Under the new plan, all games released after that date will be available only in digital format through the PlayStation Store and digital retailers, while games released before the cutoff will continue to be sold on disc.
Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer preferences, with digital purchases now significantly outpacing physical game sales.
Despite the shift toward an all-digital future, the continued demand for the PS5 Disc Drive suggests that many PlayStation users still value physical game collections. The accessory remains the only way for PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro owners to use disc-based games and Blu-ray movies, making it an important option for players who prefer physical media.
