Abdul Razzaq Tasked With Unearthing Power Hitters for Pakistan Cricket

In a move aimed at addressing Pakistan’s long-standing need for reliable power hitters, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly entrusted former all-rounder Abdul Razzaq with the task of identifying and nurturing explosive batting talent.

Razzaq, known for his hard-hitting ability and all-round prowess during his playing days, has been assigned to lead a specialized program to bolster the national team’s firepower, particularly in limited-overs cricket.

The decision comes as Pakistan gears up for high-stakes events, including the 2025 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2026.

Abdul Razzaq’s New Role at PCB

Abdul Razzaq is expected to work closely with the PCB’s High-Performance Center and the domestic cricket infrastructure to scout and train players capable of clearing the boundary at will. Although PCB is yet to disclose the ambit of his new role, his mandate likely includes organizing nationwide trials, conducting specialized training camps, and providing tailored coaching to emerging power hitters.

Addressing a Key Weakness

Power hitting has been a glaring weakness in Pakistan’s batting line up, especially in high-pressure matches where quick runs are required. While the team has seen consistent performances from top-order players like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, the middle and lower-order batters often struggle to accelerate the scoring rate in the death overs.

While Saim Ayub has emerged as a viable option, the constant failures of Sahibzada Farhan, Irfan Niazi, Usman Khan and Tayyab Tahir highlight the lack of aggressiveness needed in modern game.

This limitation was evident in this year’s T20 World Cup, where Pakistan’s inability to capitalize on slog overs cost them crucial matches. The PCB’s decision to focus on this area reflects a broader strategy to modernize the team’s approach and adapt to the evolving demands of international cricket.

Historical Context

Abdul Razzaq’s appointment by PCB is fitting, given his reputation as one of Pakistan’s most explosive batters. With a career T20 Strike Rate of 116.61, he may very well be the man to nurture Pakistan’s next generation breakout stars.
