Apple to Enter Smart Home Market with Face ID-Enabled Doorbell Camera

Apple is actively working on its entry into the smart home market with plans to launch a Face ID-enabled smart doorbell in late 2025, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This new device could position Apple as a serious competitor to existing players like Amazon Ring and Google Nest.

Face ID and On-Device Processing

The smart doorbell camera will reportedly feature Face ID, enabling it to automatically unlock doors by recognizing users. Apple developed a proprietary wireless networking chip, Proxima, to process all Face ID-related images locally on the device. Furthermore, Apple plans to offer iCloud backup for the doorbell’s data, allowing users to store footage securely while likely increasing subscription revenues for the company.

Apple has not yet clarified whether it will pair the doorbell with its smart lock system or collaborate with third-party smart lock makers compatible with HomeKit. However, the device will reportedly support the Thread smart home standard, further integrating Apple’s growing smart home ecosystem.

Expanding the Smart Home Lineup

Alongside the smart doorbell, Apple is developing a smart home hub similar to the Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Hub. Rumors suggest that this hub will feature a 6-inch touchscreen and will be powered by a custom operating system with Apple Intelligence, allowing for smart home controls and FaceTime support.

Apple is also preparing to update its Apple TV and HomePod Mini devices next year. These updates will likely strengthen Apple’s presence in the smart home market by offering seamless integration across its devices.
