Pakistan achieved a historic whitewash against South Africa in a bilateral ODI series on South African soil, marking the first such feat for the hosts.
The visitors secured a 36-run victory (DLS method) in the final match at the Wanderers, showcasing a commanding all-around performance. Saim Ayub delivered yet another star turn with a century, while debutant wrist-spinner Sufiyan Muqeem dismantled the Proteas’ batting order with a four-wicket haul.
Winning the toss in overcast conditions, South Africa chose to bowl but failed to capitalize early. Saim Ayub, in sublime form, struck his second century of the series, scoring 101 off 91 balls. His innings formed the backbone of Pakistan’s total of 308 for 9 in the rain-adjusted 47-over-a-side contest.
Ayub shared crucial partnerships with Babar Azam (52) and captain Mohammad Rizwan (53). Babar dropped early in his innings, and added 114 runs with Ayub for the second wicket before being dismissed. Rizwan joined the fray with a brisk half-century, helping Ayub build a 93-run third-wicket stand.
Despite mini-collapses towards the end, a late 74-run blitz between Salman Agha and Tayyab Tahir ensured Pakistan crossed the 300-run mark.
Chasing 308 was always going to be a tall order, especially after early setbacks. South Africa lost their captain, Temba Bavuma, for just 6 runs as Naseem Shah struck early. Despite promising starts, the Proteas’ top-order failed to convert, leaving too much for the volatile Heinrich Klaasen, who waged a lone battle with a scintillating 81 off 49 balls.
Klaasen, who scored half-centuries in all three matches, received little support apart from Bosch’s fighting 40 on debut.
The whitewash against South Africa follows a successful ODI stretch for Pakistan under their new captain. With a team finally on the up, the newly minted captain and coaching staff can turn their focus to the Champions Trophy as they look to defend their title next year.
