Saim Ayub Continues Ascent With Another Record Setting Knock

Saim Ayub’s stellar form in ODI cricket reached new heights as the young opener smashed his third century in just nine matches during Pakistan’s rain-affected third ODI against South Africa on December 22 to enter record books. Ayub’s 94-ball 101 anchored Pakistan’s innings, helping the team post a formidable 308-9 in their 47 overs at Johannesburg.

Coming into this match with Pakistan already leading 2-0 in the series, Ayub’s contribution helped Pakistan become the first team to whitewash South Africa at home in a bilateral ODI series.

A Century in Style

Saim Ayub’s road to three figures was a mix of calculated stroke play and flashes of brilliance. After reaching his half-century in 51 balls, he maintained an aggressive pace. A highlight came when he pulled Marco Jansen for a massive six to move into the 90s. His century, brought up with a stylish cut shot off Aiden Markram, took just 91 balls.

Saim’s celebration was short-lived, however, as he gloved a short ball to Heinrich Klaasen while attempting a scoop, departing two balls later.

Saim Ayub’s Remarkable Record

Ayub’s third ODI century is a testament to his remarkable rise in international cricket, achieved in just nine matches since his debut seven weeks ago. The left-hander now averages an impressive 64.37, with one half-century in addition to his three tons.

At just 21 years old, Saim Ayub has joined an elite group of cricketers with three ODI centuries before turning 23. He is now tied with Pakistan’s Salman Butt and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, and trails only Shakib Al Hasan by one century. With the Champions Trophy on the horizon in February and an upcoming ODI series against New Zealand in March, Ayub has ample opportunities to climb this prestigious list.

Player Matches Before 23 Team Centuries
Quinton de Kock 52 South Africa 8
Rahmanullah Gurbaz 46 Afghanistan 8
Sachin Tendulkar 116 India 8
Virat Kohli 69 India 7
Babar Azam 32 Pakistan 6
Ahmed Shehzad 51 Pakistan 5
Saim Ayub 9 Pakistan 3

Implications for Pakistan

Saim Ayub’s form is a massive boost for Pakistan as they prepare for the ICC Champions Trophy and other key series in the coming months. His ability to perform under pressure and build partnerships has already made him a cornerstone of Pakistan’s ODI batting lineup.
