Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated a new initiative under the Kissan Package to transition tube wells powered by fuel or electricity to solar energy.
According to a spokesperson from the provincial agriculture department, the program aims to convert 8,000 tube wells to solar power, with a budget of Rs. 9 billion allocated for its implementation.
The project’s goal is to reduce energy costs for farmers and ease the pressure on the province’s energy sector. Farmers using tube wells installed before October 30, 2024, are eligible to apply, and the application deadline is December 31, 2024. Applicants must also be registered in the land registry.
Eligible farmers can apply here. The Punjab government has announced three subsidy tiers to support the solarization of tube wells:
Farmers will need to cover the remaining costs themselves.
This project is also expected to contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. Farmers seeking more information can contact the agriculture helpline at 0800-17000.
