South Africa’s fast-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch made a sensational start to his Test career on Thursday, achieving a rare feat during the first Test against Pakistan at SuperSport Park. The 29-year-old pacer took a wicket with the very first delivery of his red-ball career, joining an elite list of bowlers to accomplish this milestone.
Bosch struck in the 15th over of Pakistan’s innings, dismissing opener Shan Masood with a sharp delivery that found the edge of Masood’s bat, resulting in a catch by Marco Jansen in the slip cordon.
By taking a wicket on the first ball of his Test career, Bosch became the fifth South African to achieve this rare feat and the 25th bowler overall in the history of Test cricket. He also equaled the record held by Australia’s veteran spinner Nathan Lyon, who famously dismissed Kumar Sangakkara with his first delivery in Test cricket back in 2011.
The first-ever bowler to achieve this milestone was Australia’s Tom Horan, who dismissed England’s George Ulyett in Sydney in 1883. Among Pakistanis, legendary all-rounder Intikhab Alam remains the only player to take a wicket with the first ball of his Test career, achieving the feat in 1959 against Australia.
Bosch’s remarkable debut didn’t stop with Shan Masood’s dismissal. The right-arm pacer continued to impress, adding three more wickets to his tally. He dismissed Saud Shakeel, Aamir Jamal, and Naseem Shah, showcasing his ability to trouble batters with pace and precision.
