Sindh Reported 3 Lac Dog Bite Cases in 2024

Sindh experienced a significant public safety crisis in 2024, with stray dog attacks injuring 300,000 people across the province.

Reports revealed that 15 people succumbed to severe dog bites, with Karachi being the hardest-hit city, reporting over 50,000 cases and 18 fatalities linked to stray dog attacks.

Experts criticized the provincial government for failing to control the stray dog population despite a 2018 pilot project on vaccination and sterilization. No follow-up programs were initiated to tackle the escalating incidents.

Medical professionals, including Aftab Gauhar, in charge of the Dog Bite Clinic, and anti-rabies specialist Dr. Romana Farhat, underscored the lack of preventive measures. They called for urgent vaccination campaigns and effective dog control strategies.

Frustrated citizens demanded robust eradication drives to ensure public safety. Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho stated that controlling stray dogs was the responsibility of municipal authorities.

However, reports highlighted that most district hospitals in Sindh lacked anti-rabies vaccines, forcing patients to travel to Karachi for treatment.

Karachi residents continued to express concerns about the increasing dog bite cases, urging authorities to ensure vaccine availability and implement dog culling operations to address the issue effectively.
